Abbotsbury to Ferry Bridge

The breakfast at Abbey house was very nice - the orange juice squeezed to order!

I decided that trying to get a bus or a taxi today might be too difficult with a walk of only 10.5 miles so opted for driving to Wyke Regis (Ferry Bridge), leaving the car at the B&B then walking back towards Abbotsbury to meet Julia and Kevin. However, Julia decided it was not fair for me to keep walking on my own so she came with me in the car and Kevin walked on his own. He set off at 8:30 and we started walking at 9:20. Our going was rather difficult with uneven ground and long grass with overhanging bushes, so you could not see the uneven ground! We missed the way signs a couple of times but it made little difference as the paths kept converging.  We met up with Kevin 4.6 miles out from our start point and mde for a pub in a camp site hoping for a coffee.......the sign said it would open at 6pm daily!! As my feet were getting quite painful we stopped at a picnic table to drink tea from Julia's flask (mine gave up the ghost!) and eat a biscuit, then we continued.  We passed the army firing range - the red flags and warning signs were a little confusing but a sentry assured us we could use the path which we did with trepidation as we could hear the gunfire.

On the return leg we saw some lamas in a field, a few horses and one rabbit, but little in the way of bird life, which I thought was strange along The Fleet.

Our B&B looked remarkably small but we were very pleasantly surprised with our rooms. The decor, the view and the welcome from the owner was superb.

As our walk was rather short and we finished at 1:30, we decided to drive into Weymouth for some lunch and shopping.  Julia bought a very nice bracelet, some M&S undies and socks, water purification tablets and travel wash, I bought a new thermos flask, a pair of socks and a water bottle with carabiner for our rafting trip next year, Kevin bought some antiseptic hand gel.....so a good shopping trip!

After showers etc we drove up the hill to the nearest pub for a meal, only to be told by the landlord that the chef had been called away b

y sudden family illness.  However he did say we could order a takeaway delivered to the pub and he would provide plates etc and he gave us some leaflets.  We opted for curry and it was delivered on time, was good value for money and one of the tastiest we had eaten in a long time.

Now back at the B&B I am sat watching 6 kite surfers doing acrobatics in the bay. It has stayed dry for us all day (though very windy) but the top of Portland is shrouded in mist. Not sure of the forecast for tomorrow yet.
